Who Would You Pick-Uglies by Scott Westerfeld Edition
I wanted to have some fun a few weeks ago so I started this little series of Who Would You Pick?
I just started noticing lately that a lot of the books I’m reading involve love triangles and quite a number of them aren’t clearly black or white on who the heroine should choose. Both guys all have their good points and are not totally bad. So how about a series of who would you pick if you had the two guys fighting over YOU and why? This week’s pick is Uglies by Scott Westerfeld.

If you have not read the Uglies series yet I highly recommend you do so! In the series Tally has two special guys in her life, David and Zane. Which one would you pick if you were in Tally’s spot? This one is a no brainer for me. I would have totally picked Zane. I never saw the appeal in David other than he was different having never been a Pretty.
- David was never a Pretty and never had his brain toyed with. Zane was able to think his way free of the brain modifications.
- Zane is a hottie where as David was just a regular joe with no facial modifications.
Ok, the rest are just things I thought were so much better about Zane. Zane was exciting, loving and had the will power to break free of the mind modifications made during the Pretty process. David just struck me as boring and I just didn’t feel the chemistry. What about you? Who would you have picked for yourself?

I have heard of this series, but I have been hesitant becuase of the whole Pretty thing. Do you think this sends out a negative message to kids, particularly young girls? I may be totally off (I only read summaries) but it seems the book in based on being pretty or UGLY.

I’ve read up to Extras and I would have picked David. Even after Zane was able to break free of the modifications, David just seemed more real.

I’m with you, Debbie. Definitely Zane! I just never could empathize with David much.

I’d go with David. Really “pretty” guys never have had much appeal to me. When a guy spends more time getting ready than I do it’s a no go. And, I”m sorry Zane, but you seem like someone who’d do that. Me? I’m more into the rugged handsome kind of guy. Like David!
Oh, I agree with Zia, too. David seemed so down to earth and real, whereas Zane seemed a little, fake. Maybe it was just my dislike of his prettiness, but that’s how he seemed to me.

I really liked David, but I loved Zane! So it would absolutely be Zane!

Great post!!! This was such a difficult series for me! I HATED Specials because I LOVE Zane! I forgot all about David half way through Pretties. Zane and Tally actually HAD a relationship while David and her was a childish stupid liking, that just happened to be first. I hated the unfairness and cruelty that happened to Zane and how quickly she just moved past that and back to David. David had a purpose and a mission while Zane only had Tally. Ugh, I will complain to Scott face to face one day! LOL!

I haven’t picked up the series, yet but I plan to eventually. At the moment, I obviously can;t weigh in but I love the concept. Can you tell me who I’d like in Uglies if I’m an Edward/Gale fan? :O)

It’s been awhile since I’ve read them but I don’t think they sent a negative message. I think instead it was pointing out that just because you may look perfect on the outside doesn’t mean you are a better person. Instead it is what is on the inside that really matters and it isn’t wrong to not want to fit into the “ideal mold” of a person.

LOL. I agree with Sab H. I think my thing with David is I didn’t feel like we really got to know him as well and he seemed kind of naive. Zane seemed more real to me.
Pam-I am an Edward/Gale fan and I liked Zane

Oh I am sad I missed the rest of these, this is a fun post. I choose Zane, because he tries so hard to stay ‘bubbly’.

I love these books! OooOoO, Scott Westerfeld is good. I think I’d pick David, because he was the first one she loved, and so I fell in love with him first. While I did like Zane a lot, I kept waiting for him to say “Oh, haha! Nevermind! I was just using you! You’re not worth my time!” or something. I guess I just never trusted him, never believed in his feelings.

Pam – I am also an Edward/Gale fan and I liked David.
Though, I also like Zane. I’m not as passionate about this one as I am the others, so I dunno. You should read the books.

I kind of had the same mistrust of Zane at first and I guess that’s why it meant so much more to me when you find out he really did love Tally.

If I weren’t “pretty” myself I think I’d have an inferiority complex being with another “pretty” person but I just loved Zane.
